Pioneer Trek

Sarah was able to go on Pioneer Trek this year with our church.  They bussed 580 kids and leaders to Wyoming for 4 days of "roughing it" like the pioneers did.

They reenact some of the struggles that the Martin and Willie Handcart Companies encountered when they got caught in an early winter on their way to the Salt Lake Valley.
Sarah looks quite dramatic in this photo.
Sarah has 4 direct relatives that survived the Martin Handcart crossing.  This is a photo of Sarah Minnie Catlin (taken in England before she left for America) who was pregnant with her 6th daughter when she made the trek.  Her oldest daughter, Sarah Augustus Squires was only 8 (my Sarah's great-great-great grandmother) and helped take care of her 4 younger sisters across the plains.  The mother gave birth in Echo Canyon right before entering the Salt Lake Valley and subsequently named her daughter Echo.  The great x4 grandfather, Henry Squires and the later father-in-law of the daughter Sarah also made the trek.  Remarkably, all of their family members survived.

All-in-all Sarah had a great time on trek.  I think that she was able to learn a lot about the struggles of the pioneers that helped settle the Utah Valley and also some of her own ancestors that participated in that great feat.
